If you have a spare internal HDD, it’s a very good idea to convert it to an external one and use it as a backup or portable media device. But how to convert internal hard drive to external HDD, you ask. Frankly, the process is very fast and simple and doesn’t cost too much.
Internal Hard Disc
First, remove the old drive from the computer (if you haven’t done that before). Then go to your local electronics store (or if you want to find a better price, go to Amazon) and buy an external enclosure. It will cost you $20-30, not more. You’ll get all the necessary software, power supplies and external and internal cables with it. Its price depends on what you want to have. If you need USB, eSata and FireWire in one place, you’ll have to pay more; if you need only USB, the external enclosure will cost you much less.
As for internal interface of enclosures the vast majority of them have PATA and/or SATA interface. Just be careful when choosing one, to be sure you’ll get what you need.
External Disc Enclosure
If you use Windows XP or Vista, or new versions of Linux, your PC will automatically detect your new-born external hard drive. If you have an older operational system, just install the drivers, which you will get with the external enclosure.
And the last thing: (1) make sure you have support for the external interface, and (2) make sure the internal interface matches your hard drive.
Internal Hard Disc With The Enclosure
If you are planing to buy a portable hard disc don't do it. Buy a internal hard disc, then convert it to a external one with external enclosure. It costs less and also internal HDD rpm is much higher that portable hard discs.
